CORPORATE ORIGINS: Formosa Plastics Corporation (FPC) was founded in 1954 as a small 120 MT/Month producer of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin, the smallest scale production in the world. Today, the combined production of FPC and FPC USA has grown to be the largest in the world. The two companies are also major purveyors of many other intermediate chemicals. OPERATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES: Taiwan is an island nation with very limited natural resources. Consequently, the bulk of raw materials needed to manufacture resins are imported. During the oil crisis of the 1970's, with many customers relying on FPC for their material supply, the importance of establishing operations in areas with an assured reserve of these resources became apparent. Several countries were considered of the investment, but the United States won out thanks to its political stability, its availability of natural resources, and its quality work force. An added benefit is the large market the United States offers for a variety of plastic goods. FPC USA was formed in 1978. ISO 9002 and ISO 14001: FPC
USA believes that achieving customer satisfaction is a primary objective.
Consistently providing quality products and services is the Company's goal,
and to do so, requires a solid management foundation. With this in mind,
FPC USA sought ISO 9002 registration. ISO 9002 registration
is a voluntary program that sets global standards for Quality Management
Systems in businesses.
